Create products with variations

Products with variations are products that you offer in different types. These differ only in certain characteristics. For example, a T-shirt that is available in different colours and sizes.

To create a product with variations, you define the attributes that distinguish the different variations from each other - for example, colours and sizes. Each combination of main product and attributes forms a variation that can be ordered individually. Furthermore, each variation has its own product number.

An example: You create a T-shirt as the product with variations. The relevant attributes for the variations are colours (white, black) and sizes (S, M, L). This means that you would sell the following individual products:

  • T-shirt in White, Size S
  • T-shirt in White, Size M
  • T-shirt in White, Size L
  • T-shirt in Black, Size S
  • T-shirt in Black, Size M
  • T-shirt in Black, Size L

Before you create your first product with variations, you should familiarise yourself with how product types and attributes work. For further information, refer to Product types and attributes.

How to create variations

  1. In the sidebar of the administration, navigate to ProductsView products.
The table shows an overview of all products in your shop.
  2. In the table, select the respective product number of the product for which you want to create variations or add a new product first.
  3. Open the tab Variations on the product settings page.
If you have already created variations for this product, these will be listed in a table on this page.
  4. Select Start assistant.
Your products with variations are strongly based on your product types. Product types define the attributes (e.g. colour) with different values (e.g. green or blue) that can be used to create variations. If you have not yet added any product types or the product types you have added do not work for the variations you want to create, add the product types first or edit them accordingly. For further information, refer to Product types and attributes.
  5. Select the product type you want to assign from the Product type drop-down menu. The page reloads and displays the attributes created for this product type.
If you select New product type, you can add a new product type.
Once you have created variations for a product, you can no longer change the assigned product type.
  6. Select up to three attributes that you would like to use by activating the checkboxes under Attributes of the product type. By default, all values for the selected attributes are automatically applied. If values do not apply to your main product, deactivate the corresponding checkboxes.

If the option you need for describing your product is missing, you can also add more values and attributes.
Attributes that are used for existing products with variations cannot be deleted.
The number of values you can use depends on your shop package. Please contact your provider for further information.
  7. Select Next.
A table is displayed listing all the variations that will be created if you continue.
  8. By default, all variations are selected for creation. If you deactivate one of the checkboxes, the corresponding variation will not be created.
  9. Optionally, you can edit the product number for new variations.
The standard product number for variations takes the number of the main product and supplements it with four numbers starting with 0001, 0002, 0003 and so on. For further information, also refer to Number formats.
  10. Select Finish.

The variations are being created. Once this process is completed, you will receive a success message.

You will see all created variations on the Variations tab of the respective product. To create further variations, select Start assistant again and repeat the steps above.

If you delete the main product, all its variations will also be deleted.
You can't create variations for variations.
If you enter the stock level for a new product with variations, this will be applied to all its variations. You can also maintain the stock level for each variation separately via its product settings page. For further information, refer to the article Stock level & Minimum stock level.
