With the Google Tag Manager you can add so-called tags to your online shop. These are for example code snippets or tracking pixels. The advantage of Google Tag Manager is that you can add these tags without interfering with the source code of your shop. For example, you can use Google Tag Manager for heatmap tracking or Instagram pixels.
Setting up the Google Tag Manager
To use Google Tag Manager, you must first sign in to Google Tag Manager with a Google Account.
The next steps depend on your previous use of the Google Tag Manager:
- When you log in for the first time, you must create an account and a container. You are completely free to set up the account and you can also use it for other use cases than your online shop. For an easier administration, however, we recommend that you use the container specifically for your online shop. Therefore you should name the container accordingly and select the content type Web.
- If you already have an account, all you have to do is set up a container. For easier administration, we recommend that you set up the container specifically for your online shop. You should therefore name the container accordingly and select the content type Web.
Once you have completed the setup of your account and the container, you will be redirected to a page that displays two code snippets. You can now use these code snippets directly to add the Google Tag Manager in your shop.
Set up the Google Tag Manager in your shop
To set up the Google Tag Manager, you need to add the code snippets that were displayed when you set up your account and the container.
1. Open the Editor by selecting Editor in the main menu within the administration area of your shop.
2. Select the gears icon at the bottom of your shop.
3. Select the Google Tag Manager symbol.
4. In the input field Google Tag Manager code <head> enter the code that should be used in the head of the page.
5. In the input field Google Tag Manager code <body> enter the code that should be used in the body of the page.

If you like, you can now activate the Google Tag Manager.
Manage the tags of the Google Tag Manager
After you have set up the Google Tag Manager in your shop, you can now create the desired tags. You can decide yourself which tracking you want to create with the Google Tag Manager.
Your shop visitors can decide to accept only the required cookies. In this case, the functionality of Google Tag Manager tags may be impaired if this causes scripts to run or cookies to be added.
Activate the Google Tag Manager
By default, Google Tag Manager is disabled in your store. This means that tracking added by Google Tag Manager, for example, will not work. Once you have set up your tags and want to use their functionality, you need to enable Google Tag Manager as follows.
1. Open the Editor by selecting Editor in the main menu within the administration area of your shop.
2. Select the gears icon at the bottom of your shop.
3. Select the Google Tag Manager symbol.
4. For the option Google Tag Manager status select On.
The Google Tag Manager is now activated.
