SSL/TLS encryption of your shop

SSL (also known as TLS) is the abbreviation for “Secure Sockets Layer” and refers to an internet encryption method. SSL encryption ensures that data exchanged between the user's browser and a server can't be read by third parties. By using SSL, data transmitted on the internet is protected from unauthorised access.

There are several good reasons for SSL encryption. For example:

  • When shopping online, sensitive data such as credit card information is transmitted. This makes it very important to secure data by offering SSL encryption.
  • Many internet users today pay attention to whether a website offers encryption or not. In the worst case, they may decide not to use your shop because they don't trust it.
  • SSL encryption is a ranking signal for search engines like Google and can have a positive effect on your shop's search engine ranking.

What you need to know about the SSL encryption of your shop

The SSL encryption of your shop depends on whether you use a custom domain or not.

If you are not using a custom domain, you don’t need to worry about SSL encryption in your shop. Your shop, including the checkout, is SSL-encrypted by default. This is also indicated by the fact that the shop address starts with https:// and not http://.

If you are using a custom domain, your shop may not automatically be SSL-encrypted. If the pages of your shop start with http:// instead of https://, you will need to take care of the encryption. The setup process differs depending on the provider. For further information/support, contact your provider.
