Multilingual shops & translations

Offering your shop in multiple languages is crucial for your international visibility. This allows you to grow your customer base and remain competitive. In addition, a multilingual shop can have a positive effect on your SEO ranking.

Source/default language

The source language for all translations is the default language of your shop, which is also the language of your shop administration. This is displayed separately, above the other languages, under Source language. You cannot change this language, and it is always available to your customers.

Translations

If available for your shop and the added language, some languages will be translated automatically once you add them. This also depends on the number of languages available for your shop package and your character limit for AI translations.

You can also see in the language table if a language was translated using AI. In the AI Translation column, you will see either AI translation enabled (AI translation enabled) or AI translations not available (AI translation not available).

If AI translations are not available for your shop, you can still translate the added languages manually. For further information, refer to Translate your content.

Language and character limits

The number of languages you can add depends on your shop package. If you have previously added more languages than are permitted under the current terms of your shop package, you can keep them. However, you cannot add new languages unless you upgrade your shop package. For further information, contact your shop provider.

If you have reached the character limit for your shop package, you can purchase a subscription for an AI Translations Add-on to expand your automatic translation capacity. As soon as you have reached the character limit, a corresponding booking link will be provided in your internationalisation settings.

How to offer your shop in multiple languages

  1. Add the languages you want to offer. You can only add translations for added languages. For further information, refer to Manage languages in your shop.
  2. Translate your shop content (e.g. text on content pages, product descriptions or category names) for these languages. This is done either automatically by AI when adding a language, or you can translate the content manually. For further information, refer to Translate your content.

System texts and standard texts (e.g. in the main menu or in the checkout) are provided automatically by the system. This means that you will only need to translate the content you have added yourself.

  3. Switch the new, fully translated languages to visible to make them available to your customers.
