Meet the requirements to upload products to Google

In order to upload your products to Google, they must comply with certain requirements. This means that certain data or information must be available for your products in a specific format. This data is needed so that Google can assign your products to the relevant search queries and display them as product listings on the Shopping tab. It is also needed if you want to use paid Performance Max campaigns.

You can make all the necessary settings described in the tables below in your shop administration.

Info

For further information, refer to the Google Merchant Center Help. Note that the Google article is very detailed and also covers aspects that are not relevant for you.

Basic product data

The basic product data is the foundation for your product listings on Google and your Performance Max campaigns.

Requirement Description

ID

This is the product number that is automatically assigned to each product when you add it in your shop administration.

Each product requires a unique identifier that has a maximum of 50 characters.

Title

The title is the name of the product. You can enter a name or edit it for existing products in the product settings.

  • Describe the product as clearly as possible.
  • For variations, enter the most important features for differentiation, such as colour, size and material directly in the product name. For example: "Blue ceramic plant pot" and "White ceramic plant pot".
  • If you sell mobile phones with a contract, add "with contract" to the product name.
  • If you sell to Russia, add the age rating at the beginning of the product name for all books and other information products.
Description

Enter a description for the product in the product settings.

  • Describe your product as clearly as possible.
  • Make sure that your product description is no longer than 5000 characters.
  • Don't use promotional phrases such as "free shipping", capital letters or gimmicky foreign characters.
  • Enter only information about the respective product. Don't include links to your shop, sales information, details about competitors, other products or accessories.
  • Use formatting (such as line breaks, lists or italics) to format your description. For further information, refer to Learn more about formatting options for text.
Link

The link to the related product detail page is automatically uploaded by your shop system for each of your assigned products.

Image

Add an image for your product in the product settings.

  • Only the main image of a product is uploaded to Google. If you add more than one product image for a product, only the image that is used as the preview image for the product in your shop will be displayed on Google.
  • Present your product as accurately as possible in the product image.
  • Don't use any promotional text, watermarks or borders.
  • Note that no image metadata will be uploaded to Google.

Price and availability

This information is used to define the price and availability for your products. Both are displayed to potential customers in your Shopping ads and free listings on Google.

Requirement Description
Availability

Enter a stock level in the product settings and remember to check it regularly. For further information on the stock level, refer to Availability settings.

  • Google supports the values In stock and Out of stock. This means that listings and ads on Google will not show if the availability of a product is low, in other words if it is below the minimum stock level.
  • Any changes to your stock level in your shop administration will be automatically uploaded to your product feed once a day.
Availability date

It is not necessary to specify the availability date, as no pre-orders can be accepted via your shop system. This requirement can therefore be ignored.

Price

Enter the price of the product in the product settings under List price.

  • Products without a price will not be uploaded to Google.
  • The currency depends on your shop country and cannot be changed for individual products. Your shop system only supports the use of one currency, namely the official currency of your shop country. For further information, refer to the section Taxes.

Product identifiers

This information is used to identify your products and can help improve the performance of your Shopping ads and product listings.

Requirement Description
Brand

Enter the product manufacturer or brand in the product settings under Manufacturer. This information is not required for films, books, and musical recordings.

  • Provide the brand name of the product as it is generally recognised by customers.
  • Only provide your own brand name if you are the product manufacturer or if the product falls into a generic brand category.
  • For products that truly don't have a brand (e.g. vintage clothes without a label or generic electronic accessories), leave this field empty.
  • Don't use values such as "Not specified", "Generic", "No brand" or "Does not exist".
Product’s Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)

Enter the GTIN in the product settings under Product code. The GTIN is a number that is used as a unique identifier for your product. The number format may vary depending on the location/product type.

The following values are supported:

  • UPC (in North America/GTIN-12)
    12-digit number like 323456789012
8-digit UPC-E codes should be converted to 12-digit codes

  • ISBN (for books)
10- or 13-digit number like 1455582344 or 978-1455582341. If you have both, only include the 13-digit number. ISBN-10 is deprecated and should be converted to ISBN-13.
  • ITF-14 (for multipacks/GTIN-14)
    14-digit number like 10856435001702
Manufacturer Part Number (MPN)

Enter the MPN in the product settings under Manufacturer product no. This information is required if your product does not have a GTIN. For all other products, this information is optional.

  • Only submit MPNs that have been assigned by the manufacturer.
  • Only provide an MPN if you are sure that it is correct. When in doubt, don't provide this attribute.
  • If you submit a product with an incorrect MPN, it will be disapproved by Google.

Detailed product description

For some products, especially clothing, additional information is required that you can't enter via the normal product settings. Instead, you’ll need to create corresponding attributes.

To do so, create a product type and name it "Google_Product_Category". For the attributes, you can either use the type Text or Text with value selection. For further information, refer to the table below and the article Product types and attributes.

Additional product information

In addition, some other product details are required for which you don't need to create your own product attributes. Below you will find more information on this and what you‘ll need to consider for the individual requirements.

Requirement Description
Condition It is currently not possible to specify the condition of a product, as your shop system is currently not designed to sell used items. You can therefore ignore this requirement.

Google restricts the promotion of some types of adult-oriented content. If your shop offers adult-oriented products or content, your ability to advertise these products on Google may be restricted.

Specify this when creating and connecting your Merchant Center account.

Multipack

It is currently not possible to create multipack products in your shop software, therefore you can ignore this requirement.
Bundle

It is currently not possible to create bundles in your shop software, therefore you can ignore this requirement.

Item group ID [item_group_id]

This ID identifies a product group that is available in different variations/variants.

To properly display all variations of a product, you need to assign and upload each variation as a separate product. For further information refer to Upload your products to Google.

All related products are labelled with the same item group ID, which is used to identify related products. This allows Google to recognise which products are related in order to display them together.

The item group IDs will be automatically transferred by your shop system for the assigned variations when you upload your products to Google.
